Nail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a common fungus condition that accounts for approximately one-third of fungal skin infections. It is an infection of the nail bed, matrix, or plate and can affect both fingernails and toenails (though it is more common in toenails).
This nail infection typically poses only minor cosmetic problems for those who have it, causing self-consciousness or embarrassment due to its unsightly appearance. However, if left untreated, onychomycosis can progress into more serious problems, including abnormal nail growth and pain when walking. At DermaHealth, we offer laser and oil treatments to effectively get rid of nail fungus.
Causes of Nail Fungus
It is very easy to get a nail infection. It can develop in people at any age, but it is more common in older adults. As you age, nails can become dry and brittle, causing cracks in a nail’s surface and allowing fungi to enter. Athlete’s foot (a common foot fungus) can also cause a toenail fungal infection, which can then spread from one nail to another. Fungus grows in warm, moist environments, which contributes to nail fungus in those who swim or play sports; wear the same pair of sweaty boots or shoes every day, or participate in a job or hobby that causes nails to be wet for hours at a time.
Signs & Symptoms
The first sign of a nail fungal infection is a spot of discoloration – typically white, yellow, or brown – at the tip of your nail. If left untreated, as the condition worsens, the discoloration may spread to most or all of the nails. If you develop nail fungus, you’re likely to see one or more of the following changes to your nails:
- The buildup of debris under the nail
- The nail begins to lift up and is no longer firmly attached to the finger or toe
- The nail turns white
- The surface of the nail feels soft, dry, or powdery
- The nail becomes thin, splits, or crumbles
- The nail thickens and turns yellow or brown
Nail Fungus Laser & Oil Treatment
DermaHealth offers laser treatments for clients suffering from stubborn nail fungal infections. This treatment is simple, inexpensive, and faster than oral medications. Our Genesis laser targets the affected nail(s) and surrounding tissue with heat in an effort to kill the fungal infection. In as little as three laser treatments, your nails can start looking healthy again.
This laser treatment becomes more effective when used in conjunction with a topical antifungal oil, which can be applied to the nails one to two weeks before and during the laser treatment for the best results. The oil soaks into the surface of the nail, penetrating the nail bed and helping destroy the fungus. As the nail grows out, you will notice a healthier color and nail. The oil can also be used by itself, though the results and effectiveness take longer to achieve. More information about Pre and Post treatment for nail fungus is here:
