Although a combination of regular exercise and a healthy diet is the best way to burn off fat and reach your ideal weight, sometimes stubborn bits of fat remain despite your healthy food and fitness regimen. In these situations, tumescent liposuction might be the best solution. So what is tumescent liposuction? It is a procedure in which a few pounds of fat are removed through the use of a small and powerful laser (which is inserted into the body) and a cannula connected to a vacuum (which removes the liquefied fat cells). Although tumescent liposuction isn’t for everyone, it could be just what you need to achieve your dream body.
What Is Tumescent Liposuction?
THE PROCEDURE
So what is tumescent liposuction? As we mentioned above, the tumescent liposuction procedure involves a tiny laser, a cannula, and a vacuum. The laser is carefully inserted into the body through a minuscule incision, where a burst of energy will pinpoint and liquefy the fat that has been troubling you. Those liquefied fat cells are then removed through the use of a cannula connected to a vacuum device. The cannula is inserted into the same tiny incision as the laser, through the layers of fat beneath the skin, so that it can remove the fat cells directly and permanently.
The duration of the procedure will vary based on the size of the treatment area, your doctor’s choices, and a variety of other factors, but one to three hours is typical. In addition, although the experience is quite comfortable due to the use of local anesthesia, you may experience soreness, aches, and tenderness following tumescent liposuction. Feel free to take a pain reliever to reduce your discomfort.
THE RECOVERY PROCESS
Thankfully, the recovery period following tumescent liposuction is short. In just 1-2 days, you should be able to return to work and your normal activities. However, take it easy. Avoid strenuous exercise, don’t move around too much (but don’t lie in bed all day either), wear compression garments, and above all, listen to your specialist’s advice.
THINGS TO KNOW
- You must maintain your diet and exercise routine if you want your body to retain its post-procedure shape.
- Following the procedure, you will have a tiny scar (1-2 mm) where the laser and cannula were inserted. Your specialist will strategically choose the spot for incision to reduce its prominence, and you can easily cover the scar with clothing or makeup.
- Tumescent liposuction only removes a few targeted pounds of fat, so it is not recommended for those hoping to lose 20 pounds or more.
- To learn if you’re a good candidate for tumescent liposuction, speak with a specialist. If you are under age 18 or trying to lose a significant amount of weight, however, it is unlikely that liposuction will be recommended. Ideal candidates for tumescent liposuction have a BMI under 25 and are near their target weight.
