Eyeliner is a makeup-lover’s best friend. It can define your eyelashes and make your eyes pop, bringing everyone’s attention to the “windows to your soul.” But if you wear eyeliner every day, you know how irritating the daily routine of applying it and taking it off can be (not to mention the raccoon-eye residue you may see at the end of the day). If that sounds like your daily makeup routine, you might consider permanent eyeliner. Although this procedure could revolutionize your morning schedule, you must choose carefully from the many permanent eyeliner styles available. Use this guide as a starting place for choosing your perfect style.
Permanent Eyeliner Styles
Different women prefer different permanent eyeliner styles. Their skin tone, hair color, eye color, and plain old preferences often impact the decision. The first step toward making a confident decision is to know and understand your options, so let’s start there.
How Bold Should Your Permanent Makeup Be?
The thickness of your permanent eyeliner will determine how bold or dramatic its appearance will be. Take a moment and think about whether you want your eyeliner to be thick, thin, or somewhere in the middle. Unlike a brush or pencil, a tattoo needle does start within the eyelashes, so make sure you clarify how thin you want your eyeliner. How thick do you currently wear your eyeliner on a day-to-day basis?
- Eyelash enhancement is an extremely subtle application of the tattoo. It can be done either as a thin line that does not leave the lash area or as a dot at the base of each eyelash. This does not give an eyeLINER look, but more of a subtle darkening and thickening of the eyelashes. This is also great for guys who want their eyes to be more noticed but not have a line.
- Thin eyeliner is great for women who want a more natural look but still want the boldness of a line. Even a very thin line can make the eyes pop in a natural, attractive way. This is a wonderful option for women who don’t wear a lot of makeup.
- Medium-width eyeliner is ideal for women who wear makeup every day and want a look that hovers somewhere between natural and bold.
- Thick eyeliner should only be selected by women who wear a significant amount of makeup each day and are ready to commit to a permanently bold makeup look. Due to the trauma of the tattooing procedure, we cannot safely tattoo an extremely thick line to the eyelid area.
Keep in mind that you can always add to your permanent eyeliner, but you can’t take anything away. So if you’re unsure how thick of a line to request, start thin. If you eventually want to add more drama or boldness for an evening, you can apply makeup over the top of the tattoo.
What Color Would You Like?
Next, you will need to decide the color of your eyeliner. Unsurprisingly, the two most common colors are brown and black. However, some facilities offer alternative colors, like green, blue, or violet. To determine which shade is right for you, examine the coloring of your skin, hair, and eyes, and then think about the look you’re hoping to achieve. For instance, if you’re pale, blonde, and hoping for a natural look, you might choose a brown instead of a bolder black.
Have You Thought About Makeup Trends?
Remember that it’s called permanent makeup for a reason! Brightly colored eyeliner is huge right now, but do you think you would like to wear it every day for the rest your life? The fad can’t last forever, but your permanent makeup will.
Winged eyeliner is also a very popular fashion trend, and looks great when it is applied. However, once aging becomes a factor those beautiful wings can become devastating teardrops as the skin sags.
For this reason, we don’t recommend trendy styles for permanent makeup. It’s best to choose a classic look, something that will never go out of style. Only you can decide what style of eyeliner you want, but carefully consider your options if you’re leaning toward something trendy. Be positive that you’ll love it for many years to come!
What Eyeliners Should I Be Wary Of?
There are some eyeliner trends that should not be considered for permanent eyeliner. For example, tattooing into the mucosa or the wet part of the eye is extremely dangerous and can lead to many medical issues.
Connecting the upper and lower eyeliner can also be popular, but can lead to complication when tattooing. The skin in the corners of the eyes is very thin, and the tattoo has a high chance of migration (or moving out of the tattoo area) and leaving a permanent bruised look.
White eyeliner is also a no-no when it comes to tattooing. White can start to look unpleasant as it ages, turning an off-white color, and it is also extremely difficult to remove. Some tattooists will also try to cover up a poorly done eyeliner with white, which can make the entire issue worse. “French” eyeliner, molded after a French manicure, is where a white line is drawn on top of another eyeliner, usually black. This can be fun with topical eye makeup, but does not look good with a tattoo.

Permanent eyeliner can be a great and time-saving decision, but you need to decide what is right for you. Carefully consider your options, imagine your future self, and move forward only when you’re absolutely certain that you’re making the right choice.
