If you’re struggling to change certain parts of your body through diet and exercise, you may be interested in liposuction. Using liposuction, you can safely and directly remove fat from specific areas around the body. Tumescent laser-assisted liposuction is the preferred method these days, because it is safer, less painful, and more effective than traditional liposuction, and the procedure and recovery time are quicker. Plus, you’ll be able to schedule it as an outpatient procedure! Before you arrange for a consultation, let’s learn how liposuction works . . .
How Liposuction Works
THE PROCEDURE
During tumescent liposuction, a very precise and powerful laser is inserted into the body through a small incision using a tiny cannula (the tube that houses the laser). With a burst of energy, the laser targets and liquifies deposits of fat cells. The area is heated consistently and thoroughly for reliable results. The laser also stimulates the skin, which can firm the skin and improve its overall appearance. Once the fat has been liquified, a different cannula is inserted through the same small opening and into the layers of fat beneath the skin. The cannula is connected to a suction device, which vacuums the liquified fat out of the body.
Note: The tumescent liposuction procedure has been declared safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE
You can have liposuction completed on your neck, face, arms, back, belly, thighs, or buttocks. To ensure that you are comfortable, you will be lightly sedated about 30-60 minutes beforehand and given local anesthesia. The liposuction process will be completed by medical doctors. It typically takes one to three hours, and you will be awake throughout. In fact, you may even need to stand during the procedure, so that the doctor can effectively reach and target the treatment area.
Afterward, you will need to wear compression garments to reduce swelling and give your skin support. You can expect to be back on your feet the following day, though you may have side effects including swelling, bruising, soreness, and redness. You can take a pain reliever to alleviate any lingering discomfort.

THE RESULTS
Tumescent liposuction is not a weight loss solution (typically, only two to six pounds are removed). Ideal candidates have a BMI under 25, are close to their target weight, and are hoping to eliminate stubborn fat that is hard to target through diet and exercise alone. The tiny incisions made during the procedure, which are typically 1-2mm, will heal quickly. You should see results within a week, and the area will continue to improve during the next six to nine months. Assuming you maintain a sensible diet and exercise, the results will be permanent.
